The rights of individuals is an important concept in data protection because they give individuals (users, visitors, customers, etc.) control over their personal data and protect it against misuse. Companies need to make sure they respect these rights to ensure their compliance with data protection requirements.
There are four rights of individuals to be aware of:
- the right of access to personal data: everyone has the right to know what data is being stored about them;
- the right of rectification: everyone has the right to rectify data concerning them;
- the right of erasure: everyone has the right to require the erasure of data concerning them;
- the right to withdraw consent: everyone has the right to withdraw their consent to data processing.
